Type folio - Refine key & refine mode
Bridging the gap between handwriting, drawing and typing.
To achieve this we developed a ‘refine key’ that triggers ‘refine mode' when typing on a document. In this mode the user can use the marker to select, move and rearrange text in the page - instead of drawing and handwriting. The marker switches between an input tool, to an editing tool.
In this project I was in charge of the interaction design. I worked together with industrial designers and visual designers, to create a consistent experience between the physical keyboard and the software.
My main focus was the functionality of refine mode, and the connection between button / indicator light, and in-screen behavior.
Other aspects were the behavior of the type folio’s backlight and key layout for different languages.
This project started with the premise of allowing users to seamlessly combine handwritten text, drawings and typed text, to make typing a core input source in the reMarkable ecosystem.
